Needs from: Greater Ottawa County United Way

Volunteer: Security Volunteer

The Holland Museum is thrilled to host two original French impressionist paintings (a  Manet and a Bouguereau) on loan from the Detroit Institute of the Arts! These paintings will be on display from April 6 - June 25. We are looking for volunteers to help us with the security of these paintings. You would be required to sit near the paintings, encouraging visitors to take a look but not touch. You are welcome to bring a book, a laptop, or anything else with you! There will be interpretive panels for the paintings and if you are interested, we are certainly willing to provide training on the galleries and other artwork (though it's not required!). These are the volunteer shifts:

Wednesday - Saturday: 11am - 1:30pm and 1:30pm - 4:00pm

Sunday: 12pm - 2pm and 2pm - 4pm

If you’re interested in volunteering, please contact Rachel Syens at rsyens@hollandmuseum.org or 616-796-3324.

Volunteer: Big Brother/Big Sister

This is the traditional Big Brothers Big Sisters one-to-one-match. Bigs and Littles form a special friendship and spend their time doing activities they enjoy. These activities may include: helping with homework, volunteering in the community, seeing a movie, going fishing, baking, crafts, sports, etc. While the time commitment for this type of match varies, most Bigs meet with their Littles 2-3 times per month. On average the match lasts three years, but our goal is that the match would last until the Little reaches the age of 18. Bigs do need to commit to at least a year minimum.

Volunteer: Client Transportation

We are looking for volunteers willing to assist on and "on call" basis for transportation needs for clients. These transportation needs are one time trips, in many cases medical appointments, that individuals are not able to get to on their own. We match Male clients with Male drivers and Female clients with Female drivers.

We are not asking volunteers to become clients "on call rides" or to be giving rides daily or even weekly. The way it is intended to work is that occasionally we will get a request, for example, that a client has a doctor's appointment with a specialist in Holland next week Tuesday at 3pm and will last an hour. We then call our Transportation Volunteers to see if anyone is available on that day at the time. We hopefully will then be able to connect that need with a driver. Most times it is a once time need. There are times though when a client might have several repeat appointments maybe once a month for 6 months. While it is nice for the same volunteer to provide the rides it is not expected.

All of our Clients are locations in NE Ottawa County and usually need rides to Holland or Grand Rapids. If you think this is something you might occasionally be able to help with please contact us.

Volunteer: Receptionist

We are looking for a Volunteer that could commit to once a week coming out and being a volunteer receptionist. You will be the first face both those in need and those looking to help will see. Love INC stands for Love In the Name of Christ and that is what we need that first face to be. While we offer many opportunities that don't require a strong commitment this is a hard position for us to fill as we are looking for a commitment. Now there are things that come up and we understand that. We are looking for someone who could fill one of our shift times and be there most of the time.

Shift Options

Monday 9a-1p Tuesday 1p-3p Wednesday 1p-3p

Our receptionist answers the phone for incoming calls and gets the caller to the needed person. Many times the receptionist is able to answer their question or get the needed information. There is some clerical work with sorting files. For those comfortable we have them follow up with clients, getting answers to a handful of questions or reminding the client of something.

If this is something you thing you might be interested in or you just have additional questions, please reach out to us!

Volunteer: Migrant Mentoring Volunteers

Did you know each year, nearly 6,000 children accompany their parents to Ottawa County from February to late November? This steam of seasonal workers from Texas, many of whom are second and third generation, has existed for more than 30 years. It is the largest population of seasonal workers in Michigan.
Spanish is the first language in the home; 78 percent of the parents have only limited English proficiency, and on average a sixth grade education level. Due to long work hours in the fields (often six days a week), low wages, and social/ geographical isolation, parents are not able to provide after-school and summer activities/lessons for their children.
The Migrant Mentoring Program matches children from local migrant camps with community volunteers. The program is designed to build cultural bridges between the larger community and the migrant worker population, while meeting the social and educational needs of the children. Volunteer mentors agree to meet with a child on a weekly basis to provide social opportunities and academic support for the duration of the migrant family's stay. The goal of the program is to increase the comfort level of the children and their families in the local community, increase access to community resources, build cultural bridges, and assist with academic achievement of migrant children. An understanding of the Spanish language is not required.  Mentors matter: Become a mentor today!

Volunteer: Food Pantry - Client Choice, serving about 2000 families each year

On average, eight families visit CAH's food pantries every day. We need help to lead families through the food pantry, helping them choose the items they need, restocking and organizing the food on the shelves, and being a good neighbor all the while.   At the moment, we are looking for additional volunteers to fill in sporadically, M-F, 8:30-Noon, and 1pm-4:30pm.
